The Illuminati was founded in Bavaria, a prominent city-state in southern Germany, by Adam Weishaupt in the late 18th century. Weishaupt, a highly gifted scholar, earned his bachelor’s degree in law at just 20 years old and became a university professor by the age of 24. He taught Practical Philosophy at the University of Ingolstadt, within the Kingdom of Bavaria.
Weishaupt was deeply influenced by the Enlightenment, a movement that emphasized reason, knowledge, and the potential for human moral improvement — a concept he called Perfektibilismus (the perfectibility of mankind). On May 1, 1776, he founded a group initially known as Perfektibilisten (“The Perfectibilists”), which was soon renamed the Bavarian Illuminati.
During the Middle Ages, academic study was often intertwined with theology, and Weishaupt was no exception. His intellectual curiosity led him to explore ancient Egyptian beliefs and Judaism, from which he drew inspiration. This exploration sparked in him a vision for a more enlightened society — one grounded in freedom, equality, and moral progress. This vision became the foundation of the Illuminati.
Following its establishment, Weishaupt leveraged his academic and social influence to expand the organization’s membership. Interestingly, some members of the Freemasons — already an established secret society — were drawn to the Illuminati’s ideas and joined its ranks. They recognized Weishaupt’s brilliance and even invited him to join the Freemasons.
